Cameras

My primary filming camera is the D850 with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. The Z30 is for b-roll and miscellaneous footage.

Keep in mind: While the D850 is a nice camera, I use it because I have it from my photography days. The Z30 kit is more than adequate for filming YouTube videos, in fact I would recommend it over the D850.

Lighting

For my main light, I use the Godox SL150WIII with the Godox CS-85D Lantern Softbox. I use the GVM RBG LED Video Lighting Kit for background and kicker lighting. You will need a light stand that can withstand the weight of your light and softbox–I recommend the SMALLRIG Light Stand, which has a 17.8 lbs max capacity.

In addition, I also use a reflector to bounce some light back into the face to fill in shadows and add a catchlight to the eyes.

The Rode NTG is my go to mic, usually mounted on the adjustable boom stand. Lately, I’ve started using the DJI Mic as well.

Software

I use a variety of software services to edit my YouTube videos, record sound, and create thumbnails. All the software products below are available for FREE.

Here are my go to products:

DaVinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design - This is the film industry’s go-to software for editing. Their basic video editor is free and comes with everything you’d need to edit your YouTube videos and more.

Audacity - I use this free audio software to record and edit sound.

Canva - Canva is great for making thumbnails. They have a free plan, which is robust and all you need to design great thumbnails.
